Shutter Repair and Refinishing Service
Worn hardware, damaged panels, paint that has chalked or yellowed. Most shutters that look like they need replacing just need the right people. We have been manufacturing whole basswood shutters in Colton, California since 1981, which means we understand how solid wood shutters are built, how they wear, and how to bring them back. Regardless of who made yours.
Elizabeth Shutters offers two professional restoration services for solid wood shutters of any brand: in-home shutter repair for worn hardware, louver tension, and panel alignment, usually completed in a single visit; and shutter refinishing, where panels are removed from your frames, stripped and repainted at the Colton, California workshop, and reinstalled to like-new condition. Service is available throughout Southern California, Northern California, and Nevada, performed by Elizabeth Shutters employees, never subcontractors. For simple fixes, ship-anywhere DIY repair kits are also available.
Restore What You Have. Change What You Want.
The same craftspeople who build our shutters handle every repair and refinishing project. No subcontractors. The people who understand shutters best are the ones working on yours.
In-Home Shutter Repair
Louvers falling out of position. A tilt rod that disconnected. Panels that won't close flush or hang crooked in the frame. These are mechanical wear issues, and on a solid wood shutter they are fixable. We service any brand of solid wood shutters throughout California and Nevada, usually in a single visit.

Most Shutters That Look Tired Just Need Attention
Before you replace a shutter, ask whether the real problem is the material or the maintenance. On a solid wood shutter, most common failures are hardware and wear issues. Louver pins lose tension. Tilt rods disconnect. Hinge screws back out. Panel catches drift out of alignment. None of these require a replacement shutter. They require a technician who understands how wood shutters are built.
What a repair visit covers
- Louver tension and pin replacement. Slats that fall, hang crooked, or won't hold position.
- Tilt rod reconnection and replacement. Louvers moving independently or a detached tilt bar.
- Hinge replacement and realignment. Panels sagging, rubbing, or not closing flush.
- Magnet and catch adjustment. Panels that bounce open or won't seat snugly.
- General hardware tune-up. Older shutters needing tightening across multiple points.
- Track and guide service. Sliding shutter systems that drag, wobble, or bind.
Any brand. Solid wood only. We repair solid wood shutters from any manufacturer. Composite, MDF, vinyl, and faux-wood materials generally cannot be repaired at the component level and are not covered by this service.
Same Shutters. New Finish. Like-New Result.
Refinishing is not a touch-up. We remove the panels from your frames, bring them to our Colton, California workshop, strip the existing finish, repaint in your chosen color with the same premium acrylic coating we use on new shutters, and reinstall. Your frames stay in place the entire time.
It is also how you change the color of your shutters. Moving from a dated color to a fresh white. Converting stained wood to a painted finish that matches new trim. Bringing shutters you've had for fifteen years up to the standard of a room that has been renovated around them.
How it works
- In-home assessment. We confirm the shutters qualify, review finish options, and show color samples in your actual light.
- Panel removal. Panels come out cleanly. Frames stay in place. Windows are uncovered while the panels are in the workshop.
- Workshop refinishing. The existing finish is stripped and the new finish is applied in a controlled environment, not on a drop cloth in your living room.
- Inspection and reinstall. Every panel is inspected, rehung, aligned, and tuned before the visit ends.
Most refinishing projects complete within a few weeks from panel removal to reinstallation.
Solid wood only, and the conversion runs one direction. Refinishing is available for painted solid wood shutters and for stained solid wood shutters converting to paint. Painted shutters cannot be converted back to stain. Composite, vinyl, and synthetic shutters are not eligible.
Handy? There's a Kit for That.
Not every fix needs a service visit. A single loose louver pin or a lost tension screw is a fifteen-minute job for a homeowner with a screwdriver. That's why we build shutter repair kits with the same original-spec hardware our own technicians use, and ship them anywhere in the continental United States.
| Comparison | DIY Repair Kit | In-Home Service Visit |

Manufacturers Who Repair. Not Dealers Who Replace.
Most shutter companies are dealers. They don't have a workshop, a paint booth, or the tooling to work on shutters at the component level. When something breaks, the answer is usually replacement. It doesn't have to be.
Built here. Serviced here.
Our technicians work alongside the people who manufacture our shutters. When they look at a worn panel, they know exactly how it was built and how to bring it back.
Any brand. Same standard.
You don't need to have bought from us for us to service what you have. The material qualifies the shutter, not the name on the box.
No subcontractors.
Every visit is staffed by Elizabeth Shutters employees. If something isn't right, you call us and we come back.
“A solid wood shutter that was built correctly does not need to be replaced. It needs to be understood. Most of what looks like failure is just wear.”
Dean Frost, Founder & CEO — Elizabeth Shutters, Manufacturing in Colton, California since 1981

Repair and Refinishing: What Homeowners Ask
Can plantation shutters be repaired instead of replaced?
Yes, when they are made from solid wood. Most common shutter problems, including loose louvers, disconnected tilt rods, sagging panels, and misaligned catches, are hardware and wear issues resolved in a service visit. Solid wood holds hardware and can be re-tuned over the life of the shutter. Composite and synthetic materials generally cannot be repaired at the component level.
Do you repair shutters from other brands?
Yes. Elizabeth Shutters repairs solid wood shutters from any manufacturer throughout California and Nevada. The material determines whether a shutter can be serviced, not the brand. We do not repair composite, MDF, vinyl, or synthetic shutters because those materials cannot reliably hold repairs at the hardware level.
Should I buy a repair kit or schedule a service visit?
A repair kit is the right choice for a single, obvious fix like a loose louver pin, a worn tension screw, or a missing magnet, if you're comfortable with small hardware. A service visit is the right choice when there are multiple issues, when panels sag or won't close, when the problem is structural, or when you'd rather have it diagnosed and fixed in one appointment. Kits ship nationwide; service visits cover California and Nevada.
What does shutter refinishing involve?
Shutter refinishing means the panels are removed from the frames in your home, transported to our Colton, California workshop, stripped of the existing finish, repainted in your chosen color with a premium acrylic coating, and reinstalled. It is not a touch-up or an on-site paint job. The result is shutters that look and perform as they did when new.
Can shutters be repainted a different color?
Yes. Refinishing is available in any color, including custom matches to existing trim, cabinetry, or new paint. Most homeowners use refinishing to update a dated color, match renovated trim, or convert stained shutters to a painted finish.
Can stained shutters be converted to painted shutters?
Yes. Solid wood shutters with a stained finish can be converted to paint through the refinishing process. The stain is stripped, the surface is prepared, and a painted finish is applied. The reverse conversion, from painted back to stained, is not available.
How long does shutter repair take?
Most in-home repair visits are completed in a single appointment. The technician assesses the issue, performs the repair, and tunes alignment and operation before leaving. If a part isn't on the truck, a follow-up visit is scheduled.
Is refinishing less expensive than replacing shutters?
In most cases, yes. Refinishing restores the original appearance and performance at a significantly lower cost than full replacement, especially when the shutter structure is sound and only the finish needs to change. An in-home assessment gives you the accurate comparison for your specific openings.
What shutter materials qualify for refinishing?
Refinishing is available for solid wood shutters only, including whole basswood and hardwood shutters with painted finishes, plus stained solid wood converting to paint. Composite, MDF, vinyl, and synthetic shutters cannot be stripped and recoated to the same standard and are not eligible.
Where do you offer shutter repair and refinishing?
Throughout Southern California, Northern California, and Nevada, including Los Angeles, Orange County, San Diego, the Inland Empire, the Bay Area, and the Sacramento Valley, plus Las Vegas, Henderson, Reno, and Lake Tahoe. Every visit is staffed by Elizabeth Shutters employees, not subcontractors.
